Applying for a Grant

Who is eligible to apply?

We accept applications from individuals, family coalitions, community groups, tribal entities, non-profit organizations, or startup enterprises founded by members of communities impacted by land loss.


How much do you give?

We make grants between $500 and $5,000.


When are grant applications due, and when are decisions made?

Grant applications are due by September 15 of each year, and decisions are made by late October. In the event of an urgent need for emergency preservation funds, please reach out to us at landberryfoundation@gmail.com ahead of your application.

Instructions for 2023 Applications

Landberry accepts applications from individuals, family coalitions, community groups, tribal entities, non-profit organizations, or social innovation startups/enterprises founded by members of communities impacted by land loss. Awards range from $500 to $5,000, but most grants will be under $3,000.

Community groups, tribal entities, and non-profit organizations may apply for and receive funding up to three years in a row, but must reapply each year. Individuals, families & family coalitions may apply for and receive funding up to two years in a row, but must reapply each year. Startups & family enterprises may only receive funds once, but unsuccessful applicants may reapply. A site visit may be made after a grant is awarded.

Recipients must provide an interim report by June 1st of the year following the granting of funds, and a final report by November 1st of the year following the granting of funds.

The full grant application should be no longer than a max 2,000 word narrative, plus budget(s), financial statement, and (if applicable) a tax ID designation letter.
A complete proposal will include the following:

For Non-Profit, Tribal & Community Organizations:

  • Name, title, email, and phone for the organization's primary contact

  • IRS tax ID letter of designation as a 501(c)3

  • A Background Statement, detailing:

    • a brief background on your organization or tribal community, including a mission statement or short history;

    • the names and titles of staff, key staff bios, and composition of the board;

    • the constituency and geographic region served; and

    • the type of services provided;

    • a description of why the organization and proposed activities align with the Landberry Foundation's mission and program interests. 
 


  • A Proposal Statement, including:

    • A description of the activities for which you are requesting support, including the need/issues that will be addressed, and amount requested.

    • An outline of objectives and specific anticipated outcomes from the impact of the Landberry Foundation’s contribution. 


    • A detailed project budget including the total amount of funding needed, the amount you intend to request from the Foundation, and information about other sources of support with both requested and secured funding noted. 


  • A budget for the full organization, along with financial statements from the organization’s last fiscal year. 



For Families, Family Coalitions & Individuals:

  • Name, title, email, and phone for the primary contact person, as well as

    • A genealogy or short description of the kinship tie this person holds to the family;

    • signatures of support from at least three family members (signature, name, and their kinship connection to you) for you to take on the leadership of this application; and

    • the names and titles of key family leaders or elders, and a description of the process by which you make collective family decisions.


  • A Background Statement, detailing:

    • a brief background on your family, including a short history of your ancestral origins and connection to the land, as well as

    • a brief description of the manner in which the land has historically been used, and is currently being used. 


  • A Proposal Statement, including:

    • A description of the activities for which you are requesting support, including the need/issues that will be addressed, and amount requested.

    • An outline of objectives and specific anticipated outcomes as a result of the Landberry Foundation’s support. 


    • A detailed project budget including the total amount of funding needed, the amount you intend to request from the Foundation, and information about other sources of support with both requested and secured funding noted. 


    • If land purchase or retention is part of the project for which support is requested, then an Asset Protection Plan detailing the actions you will take (or have taken) to ensure the retention of your family land over the next 20 years. Applicants may be required to complete a 3-hour Asset Protection training with Landberry’s partner organizations before funds will be dispersed.


For Social Innovation Startups & Enterprises:

  • Name, title, email, and phone for the organization's primary contact

  • An IRS Tax ID number or EIN

  • A Background Statement, including:

    • A brief background on your enterprise, including a mission statement, vision, and pitch deck (if available);

    • A description of your business model, and the factors that qualify your enterprise as a social venture;

    • The names and titles of staff, key staff bios;

    • The constituency and geographic region served, and the type of services provided. 


  • A Proposal Statement, including: 

    • why your enterprise and the proposed activities align with the Landberry Foundation's mission and program interests;

    • your background as a member of a community impacted by land loss;

    • a description of the activities for which you are requesting support, including the need/issues that will be addressed, and amount requested; and

    • an outline of objectives and specific anticipated outcomes as a result of the Landberry Foundation’s support. 


    • a detailed project budget including the total amount of funding needed, the amount you intend to request from the Foundation, and information about other sources of support with both requested and secured funding noted.

  • A budget for the full organization in this fiscal year. 




    The proposal and documents described above must be sent as a pdf attachment to grants@landberry.org with the subject heading “Proposal from [ORGANIZATION NAME]”. We prefer to receive one pdf with the proposal, budgets, financials, etc. The proposal should include the full contact information of the individual responsible for the proposal.
